Young people involved in the Promising Futures of Central Indiana Teen Leaders in Action have an opportunity to serve the organization and community. This group keeps the organization informed on current youth issues and how to better relate to kids. They offer peer presentations in area schools and community events to increase awareness of issues affecting today’s young people. Teen Leaders in Action participants must be between 13 and 18 years old.
Participants must give a minimum of 10 volunteer hours in addition to Teen Leaders in Action meeting time. Volunteer opportunities include, but are not limited to:
- Conducting Safe Place presentations
- Attending a fair or festival as a representative of Promising Futures
- Conducting research on youth runaways and homelessnes.
- Street outreach for youth (with adult supervision)
- Recruiting other Leadership Development participants
- Participating in Promising Futures fundraising events
As a Teen Leaders in Action member, each young person enhances life skills that positively impact future plans, whether applying to colleges, joining the workforce or making a difference in the community. Each member becomes a strong advocate for youth in crisis and provides feedback to Promising Futures' staff on ways to enhance services to youth, their families, and the community in general.
Specifically, Teen Leaders in Action participants:
- Become proficient advocates for youth
- Develop assertiveness, public speaking and leadership skills
- Initiate change for youth in crisis
- Increase awareness of abuse, neglect, homelessness, social and family problems
- Develop conflict management skills
The Teen Leaders in Action meets monthly for approximately one hour in addition to committee duties.
