Safe-Place Host Homes

SAFE PLACE / HOST HOMES

PROJECT SAFE PLACE

Project Safe Place is a national community safety program for youth locally sponsored by Promising Futures of Central Indiana. Safe Place operates 24 hours a day, every day, year round and serves Hamilton and Tipton Counties.

Any public facility displaying this sign is a "Safe Place," if you need help, go there. To find the closest Safe Place location, text 69866 with the word SAFE and your current location or call 317-773-6342 or 1-877-723-3550 toll free.  Youth in crisis can text the word SAFE and their current location to the number 69866 and they will receive an address and contact number for the nearest Safe Place site.

Help is free and confidential! - When a young person enters a Safe Place site and asks for assistance, an employee at the site provides the youth with a safe and secure place to wait while the employee calls Promising Futures. Within 30 minutes, a trained and authorized volunteer meets the youth at the site. The volunteer provides transportation to Promising Futures where help can begin.

Safe Place is designed to provide safe and immediate help for runaway, homeless and in-crisis youth. Safe Place provides the opportunity for teens to take the initiative in getting help. The majority of cases, teens receive crisis intervention counseling and referral for the family, and in some instances, emergency shelter care is provided with parental permission. Project Safe Place is a resource available to any youth experiencing abuse, neglect, social or family problems with which he or she is unable to cope.

Project Safe Place is a nationally operated program with more than 10,000 sites in 41 states. Youth seeking help can expect the program to operate in the same way at all locations displaying the Safe Place sign.

All Safe Place sites receive training so that employees know how to handle any youth asking for help. Our goal is to strengthen and unite families. Calling 317-773-6342 or 1-877-723-3550 toll free directly can also access help from Safe Place.

HOST HOMES

We want each day with our families to be filled with laugher, joy and communication. There are times, however, when laughter turns to tears, joy to sadness and talking to arguments. When family conflicts become unmanageable, a temporary break from each other may be just what the family needs.

In other circumstances, the primary caregiver may be unable to care for the children. This may be due to a medical emergency, eviction or homelessness, or another situation beyond their control.

For these and other reasons, children and teens become homeless, endangered and lost each day. Host Homes serve as both a resource and a safety net for youth in need.

Host Homes are provided by screened and trained community volunteers. Shelter is available for up to 21 days. During this time, Promising Futures staff work with family members to resolve conflicts within the family or find a more permanent or long-term solution for the child(ren).

During a young person’s stay in a Host Home, Promising Futures staff conducts an assessment of their independent living skills and their abilities to manage conflict and anger. In addition, the Host Home volunteers provide the youth opportunities to develop life skills such as meal planning, laundry, assisting with household chores, community service, personal exercise and hygiene.

Promising Futures Host Homes program serves Hamilton, Madison and Tipton County.
